Farewell to Tyrrells: Premium British Chips Exit Woolworths and Major Australian Supermarkets

Breaking News: Tyrrells Chips Disappear from Australian Shelves

In a surprising development, UK potato crisp brand Tyrrells has been delisted from major Australian supermarket chains, including Woolworths, where the range is now marked as “out of stock” online.

The End of an Era

Tyrrells, which began its journey in 2002 on a farm in Herefordshire, England, became renowned for its hand-cooked chips with distinctive flavours. The brand entered the Australian market in 2012-2013, securing a major distribution deal with Coles and even establishing its first overseas factory in Victoria after acquiring Yarra Valley Snack Foods.

The company had made significant investments in Australia, including $6 million in imported equipment and skill development, supported by government grants. The Australian version of Tyrrells maintained its British heritage while using locally grown potatoes.

The Reason Behind the Exit

According to Snackbrands Australia, which manages Tyrrells locally, the decision was driven by insufficient demand. The company acknowledged its loyal customer base but explained that they needed to balance consumer requirements with retail partner needs when making such difficult decisions.

Consumer Response and Future Availability

The sudden disappearance has left consumers frustrated, with many expressing their disappointment on social media about the products vanishing “without warning or even clearance tags.” However, there’s still hope for devoted fans: Tyrrells products may still be available at select Harris Farm, 7-Eleven, or The Reject Shop locations while stocks last. The factory will continue producing Tyrrells chips for Asia-Pacific markets.

Many Australians have taken to online platforms to express their disappointment, hailing Tyrrells as “the best chips on the shelves” and “the king of chips.” While Snackbrands has suggested alternatives like Kettle or Natural Chip Company, loyal customers maintain it won’t be the same.
